Artillery Street Office Restoration

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

JPM Contracts Ltd undertook the restoration work on Caldwell Robinson’s offices in Artillery Street, Derry. This historical building sits along the city walls. Architects Tate Stevenson oversaw the restoration work, which transformed three vertical 1870s houses into three horizontal office floors.

The building when handed to us had been derelict for a number of years. The architect wished to retain all the external features including the bend in the front wall as part of the finished scheme. The building required a new internal structural frame, together with all new lintels and some replacement roof members. Some of the internal walls were re-pointed and left exposed. The external plaster was a special brick mortar imported from London. It had special qualities and was applied in a number of coats. The windows and doors were all made in our joinery workshops. The internal walls left were re-pointed using lime mortar and salvaged brick from the demolition.

The restoration took 8 months “a remarkably short time in which to preserve a building that may have been lost forever” The Irish Times, October 2007
